Wakefield Council approves plans to turn former call centre into mosque

The Wakefield City Council in the United Kingdom has granted approval to convert a former call centre into a mosque, following the closure of an existing prayer facility due to a major redevelopment project in the city centre.

Hawzah News Agency- According to documents submitted to the council, the new center is intended to meet the religious needs of the local Muslim community. The planning consent allows the mosque to operate from 6am to 10pm, Monday through Saturday.

The proposal received widespread public support, with 454 individuals submitting comments in favor of the project, stressing the urgent need for a new place of worship. However, 194 objections were also filed, mainly citing concerns over traffic congestion and on-street parking.

In addition to the prayer facility, the project includes a madrassa where up to 20 children will study the Quran on weekday evenings. The madrassa will operate under strict guidelines, with access regulated by staff to ensure discipline and order.
